It is an international synthetic biology foundation which aims to promote the science of synthetic biology. Teams work all year to develop genetically engineered systems which typically aim to solve a real world global problem. Teams that manage to achieve this travel to Boston Massachusetts each year to attend a five-day jamboree where their projects are presented and judged. It is the premier synthetic biology competition in the world and is extremely well known and respected among academia worldwide. The competition is now over ten years old after been originally founded as a small scale intercollegiate competition in the United States. The first competition brought teams only from MIT, Caltech, Boston University, University of Texas-Austin and Princeton. It has grown every year since with the 2018 edition attracting over 330 teams from across the globe including the addition of teams from Oxford, Stanford, UCLA and Harvard.
Synthetic Biology – An Introduction
Synthetic biology is the convergence of the newest advances in chemistry, biology, computer science, and engineering. This merging enables us to go from an idea to a world changing product faster, cheaper, and with greater precision than ever before. Synthetic Biologists work by designing and constructing new biological entities such as genetic circuits and cells to create something useful which can help tackle a global challenge. More specifically, synthetic biology aims to write DNA that can be combined with an existing cell which then in turn instructs the cell or organism to behave according to pre-designed specifications. Applications of this field include the development of new technologies to treat a disease, ease the worlds energy & food crisis, sense a toxic compound in the environment, cleanpollution or produce a valuable commodity.
Although iGEM’s foundation is rooted in the sciences of biology and chemistry, it, like most careers, is multidisciplinary, requiring a team of several individuals with a wide range of skills to work collaboratively to achieve common goals. The types of individuals we are looking for include, but are not limited to:
1 – Wet Lab Team – who will do most of the work in the lab including bacterial and DNA cloning, quantitative measurements, gene splicing and, protein expression & purification. The willingness to work long hours after school in the lab and patience are key skills here.2 – Dry Lab Team – who will be behind many of the decision making within the project design based on mathematical modeling of designed systems. Advanced modeling software licenses, such as MathWorks and Pymol are provided to this team. The skills honed here form the basis of many 21st century careers.
3 – Human Practices Team – The new science of synthetic biology requires its members to be reasonable advocates for its sustainability. Part of this process involves effective communication with industry leaders, medical professionals, the public, and businesses. Members who can contribute to this team will be great communicators and be required to inform and plot the direction of our project first hand by visiting and talking with the people within the industry that could benefit from our research.
4 – Graphic Design Team – Synthetic biology is as much a business venture as it is a research science. Therefore iGEM teams must promote and represent their work in an attractive manner. Among the requirements for the competition are: a unique website, designed by the team, a poster outlining the work, a team banner and many other team swag that will the front line representation of the whole team. Talented artists, creative minds, coders or anyone willing to work in a multidiscipline team should apply
