Our school uses both the national textbooks compiled by the Ministry of Education and the Shanghai Curriculum Reform New Textbook Series. While ensuring the quality of teaching and learning, primary school teachers created unique features for the primary school department.

Chinese

The Chinese language course of the Pioneer Class, based on the use of the Ministry of Education’s compiled textbooks, fully implements the new Chinese curriculum standards. While consolidating the basic knowledge, it focuses on the expansibility and extension of knowledge and pays attention to the cultivation of students’ thinking abilities. Through extensive reading, help students build cultural confidence and comprehensively enhance their literacy in the Chinese subject.

Mathematics:

The Pioneer Class mathematics curriculum currently uses the Shanghai Curriculum Reform New Textbook series, along with the school’s self-developed supplementary materials, including English-Math exercise books and hands-on activity workbooks. In the new academic year, the school will integrate the new mathematics curriculum standards to help students establish a mathematical knowledge system that is supportive for their future studies, assist them in learning to view problems from a developmental perspective, and form scientific thinking habits.

English:

The dual-teacher English course is the core module of the Pioneer Class curriculum. Under the joint leadership of two English group heads, one Chinese and one foreign, the English department has adopted a 1:1 class hour allocation system for both Chinese and foreign teachers to comprehensively enhance students’ English proficiency and literacy.

One of the key focuses of English courses is on graded reading. The school has purchased an online graded reading account for each student. At the beginning of each semester, foreign teachers will take the students to the computer room for a diagnostic assessment to test their English reading proficiency. The graded reading system will be based on the student’s actual reading ability, recommend suitable books for him/her to read and study every day.

At the end of the semester, teachers will conduct a summative assessment for each student, providing objective data feedback on their overall reading performance, including reading time, vocabulary acquisition, and reading proficiency levels throughout the term. The school’s initial plan on achieving the reading target for G1 to G5 students by grade:

In Grade 1, students typically read about 50 words per day in the first semester and 100 words per day in the second semester, totaling approximately 20,000 words for the year. By Grade 5, their daily reading volume increases to around 600 words, with an annual total of about 130,000 words. When students advance to Grade 3 and Grade 5, the school provides opportunities for them to take the TOEFL Primary and TOEFL Junior assessments. In these internationally recognized English proficiency tests, our students consistently outperform the national average in listening, reading, speaking, and other language skills

Bilingual courses:

The school comprehensively promotes cross-cultural teaching in music, art and physical education courses. Teachers will set different learning contents according to students’ different learning abilities and learning needs.
For instance, after five years of study in the primary school, child can master at least five Chinese and five Western art techniques in the field of art.
In the field of music, child should be able to master at least five Eastern and five Western Musical Instruments.
In terms of physical education, the school not only ensures one physical education class every day but also introduces different sports specialties for each grade to enhance students’ physical health.

Extended courses:

1The compulsory courses within the class include:
Chinese martial arts, Go (Weiqi), soccer, basketball, tennis, fencing, badminton, STEM, etc

2、In-class electives:

In-class electives are a supplement to basic courses. Electives allow each student to choose subjects based on their interests or strengths, ensuring personalized learning where every student gains knowledge and develops expertise. (Examples: AI robots, German, cooking classes, painting creation, calligraphy, etc.)

3、Parent Career Lecture Course

Parents from diverse professions and backgrounds leverage their expertise and passions to deliver engaging lectures, enriching children’s knowledge, broadening their horizons, and laying the foundation for their future career planning.

Exploratory courses

Exploratory courses such as Exploring Courses, Museum Courses, Intercontinental Carnival Courses, and Traditional Chinese 24 Solar Terms Courses have been consistently implemented by the school. These programs revolutionize traditional classroom teaching by centering learning around a single object, a continent, or a solar term, integrating all disciplines to foster students’ inquiry skills and creativity. Through this approach, students gain insights into both Chinese and global cultures, customs, and traditions, preparing them to become outstanding citizens of China and the world.

Personalized elective courses

The school tailors interdisciplinary courses to meet individual student needs, ensuring a solid foundation in core knowledge while nurturing distinctive strengths—preparing them to become well-rounded future talents.
