Learning is far beyond classroom teaching and is intrinsic to our lives. The series of “Versatile XieHe” reports aim to help discover a diverse life in school education from different perspectives. “Whilst Mr. East and Ms. West move one step towards to each other, the gap between the two will be getting ever smaller, and I believe they would finally meet up.” Sticking to the value that “unity in diversity, innovation through collaboration”, XieHe is always dedicated to cultivate world citizenship with a great open vision, where east meets west. In Wanyuan, lives are enriched with colorful and versatile elements, which are huge enrichment to the academic achievements. In XieHe, we do have gifted pupils with their fantastic performance.

My previous SUIS international school experience provided me the foundation to quickly adapt to Wanyuan community. My past four years of Wanyuan experience helped me realize how much I have changed. With an open curriculum and diverse activities provided at Wanyuan, I was able to truly explore my potential and solve challenges far beyond language barriers.
我第一次真正接触科学研究是在九年级时参加协和跨校区科技联赛。也许对于很多学生来说科学展是一个不值一提的活动,但这却真正开启了我探索科学领域的冒险之旅。我清晰地记得跟我的队友Sherry Mao泡在实验室里把残留食物变废为宝,开发新能源,努力斩获的实验组一等奖,给了我无限继续前行的鼓励。今年跟Yoyo Liu一起设计调查问卷试图探索导致孩子性别的因素的经历也令人难忘。还有参加学校iGEM社团的我完全被合成生物的复杂性而折服和吸引着,这些有机地将课堂上学到的理论知识结合实践的科学研究提供给我绝妙的机会去不断地反思科学的两面性,令我收获颇多。
My first experimentation on STEM was during ninth grade cross-campus science fair. Perhaps science fair was insignificant for many students, but it was my attempt in trying to connect with the world of science which I was afraid of. I remembered staying in the lab working on waste food source with my teammate Sherry Mao. Together we made experimental design first place, and it means a lot to us. I also enjoyed distributing survey with Yoyo Liu trying to find what caused differences in child gender. Those experiences allow me to reflect on the duality of STEM. I later participated in the school’s iGEM team. I was mind blown by the difficulty of synthetic biology, it had broadened my perspective.
我在科学活动方面的实践也同时带给我很多将艺术与科学相结合的灵感。我尝试着把一些生物元素带入到我的艺术作品中。我以琼脂板为媒体创作了一系列作品来表达对现有的一些科学法则的不满和保留意见。我非常喜欢创作它们的过程,这些作品也让我不停地去反思我与科学之间的关系。除此之外,我还会反复画美国队长盾牌,我把这种绘画当作打破我与美国文化之间的屏障,反复画盾牌也可以提高我的绘画技巧。很神奇的是这些都成为了我大学申请中非常重要的元素。这让我意识到我不仅仅要参加学术活动,最重要的还是做自己喜欢的事。
My STEM experiences provided me inspirations to incorporate art with science. I was able to integrate biology element into my artwork. The series of work I created using agar plate as a media was intended to express my discontent toward science rule. It allows me to reflect on my relationship with science. I truly enjoyed creating them. I had also repeatedly drawn Captain America’s shield as a way to break the culture barrier I had with American culture. It is also a good way to improve my drawing skill. Strangely this played an important part in my college application. It made me realized how important it is to participate not only in academically based activities but do what I like.
关于大学的申请University Application
我的大学申请主要是围绕文理学院,尤其是女校展开的。很多人都不理解我为什么要去一个性别单一的学校。在我看来,女校并不单一,反而是一个更加多元化的学府。女校里有来自不同国家背景,有着不同爱好,有着不同信念,但都怀有一个共同的目标的丰富群体。女校的学习气氛就是我最喜欢与向往的。在女校,我可以跟一些有上进心,很有竞争能力的同学们一起探讨,找寻自己的突破点。我认为去女校不是传统观念所认为的被约束,而是为了打破约束。
